The effects of aging and pregnancy can result in downward movement of the breast tissue and sagging of the skin. There may also be an increase in the size of the nipple or in the skin around the nipples. These conditions are rarely corrected by breast implants alone. Some patients may be satisfied with their breast size; however, they desire a more “uplifted” or “perkier” appearance. These conditions are easily addressed by a procedure called mastopexy or breast lift.
Using this procedure, the surgeon re-shapes the breast tissue to a new and a more desirable shape. This procedure also re-positions the nipple and areola to a higher location. Even without the use of an implant, the breasts are often more rounded and full-appearing due to the repositioning of the tissues.
Individuals who have lost a large amount of weight may also develop sagging of the breasts. In these patients, the same technique is employed to reduce the amount of excess skin and restore a more uplifted and a natural appearing breast.
Other patients may be concerned the size of their breasts. Large, heavy breasts can cause neck, back, and shoulder problems. They also interfere with the fit of clothing and may be a source of embarrassment. The breast lift procedure may also be modified to include removal of a significant amount of breast tissue to alleviate symptoms. Many times, the more extensive scars usually needed for a breast reduction can be minimized. For patients who desire an improved breast shape or smaller more youthful size, mastopexy and breast reduction can be excellent choices.
Breast augmentation has been one of the most commonly performed procedures that women have chosen since the advent of the operation over 30 years ago. There are many options available for women choosing this procedure, depending on their personal preferences. Breast size is one important consideration, and one effective way to predict how a woman will look is for her to view “before and after” pictures of women who are similar to her body type. All consultations include this important step, and some women may also wish to see the actual implants for themselves or even try them on beneath their clothing to get an idea of their size after surgery.
Some improvement in the breast shape can be made by placement of breast implants, and previewing this change is another important role for the “before and after” pictures. Although some degree of “lift” can be expected from a breast augmentation, placement of implants alone is usually not sufficient for women who desire a major change in their breast shape. A breast lift can often be combined with an augmentation to provide the most pleasing results.
The location of the incision is of concern to many women. Using the latest video endoscopic techniques, Dr. LoMonaco can perform the surgery through a nearly undetectable incision in the armpit area. Other patients may wish to have an easily concealed incision beneath the breast. No single technique is right for every patient, but by performing a careful interview and examination, you can reach a decision that offers the best results for you.
Surgery for Gynecomastia:
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts." Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

Plastic surgery is truly experiencing a renaissance, and it couldn’t come at a better time. New materials are being added every day to our armamentarium, and new techniques are being refined and developed. The need for new approaches is greatest for patients who have had bariatric surgery, or those who have lost a large amount of weight by dieting. Addressing the issues of the damaged and excess skin is challenging to say the least, but has spawned in my opinion is a new sub-specialty in plastic surgery.
The following information is designed especially to address the concerns of weight loss patients and those requiring more advanced body sculpting techniques. I have dedicated a separate section of this website, and also developed an entirely new website to accommodate what I consider to be the most challenging, rewarding, and fascinating group of patients I have worked with.
