About Dr. Albert Ko, M.D.

Dr. Ko was born and raised in New Jersey. As early as high school he knew he wanted to become a physician. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University. He then attended Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia for his Medical Degree. Early in medical school Dr. Ko knew he wanted to become a surgeon. Fortunately soon after that realization he discovered plastic surgery. The diversity of problems and the detail-oriented work are what attracted him most.

He remained in Philadelphia and completed a full General Surgery residency at the Graduate Hospital in affiliation with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Doctor Ko then traveled to UMASS Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts for his training in Plastic Surgery. As part of that training he spent time at Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side. There he studied cosmetic surgery techniques from some of New York's busiest Plastic Surgeons. While there he fostered relationships with some of the surgeons and still keeps it touch with them today. Whether it is to discuss a challenging case, evaluate a new technique, or to just say hello to an old friend… Dr. Ko believes in forming lasting relationships with colleagues and patients.

Since the completion of his training Dr. Ko has been a full time member of the Medical Staff at the Cambridge Hospital. He is fully trained and board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery, but now limits his practice to plastic surgery. He has served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Cambridge Hospital since 2001.

His new office in West Roxbury, Massachusetts is devoted exclusively to Cosmetic Surgery.

Our Practice

Our goal is simple: to provide you with the highest quality care. We have put together a caring team of professionals to help you to achieve your goals. We are very proud of our beautiful new space and we look forward to your first visit with us. We have tried to create a warm, personal and professional environment so you can feel relaxed and reassured during your visit.

We believe in education…your education. We believe that the more you know about the services and procedures that we offer, the easier it will be for you to make an informed decision about your care. It is also important that you understand the nature and cause of your concerns, whether it is the aging process, sun damaged skin or the effects of weight-gain and weight-loss. All of our staff will take the time to explain everything to you in simple terms. This we feel will lead to a higher degree of satisfaction – both yours and ours!

We at Society Hill Center for Cosmetic Surgery have spent a tremendous amount of time in designing our office space. From your very first step into our comfortable reception area to your consult or treatment in one of our modern exam rooms you will feel the peaceful ambiance that abounds in our office.

We have tried to create a workspace that flows naturally. And we have thought of you and what you would want in an office design. For example we have a separate, discreet entrance/exit for those leaving (or for patients coming in for their procedure/first post-op check) so you will not have to travel back through the reception area. We also have a separate waiting area out of sight from the main desk. And for the future we have a fully planned operating room and recovery area.

Please be sure to take a tour when you come in for your first visit. And don't forget to ask our receptionist about upcoming seminars.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast for a number of reasons:

·          To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small.

·          To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy.

·          To balance a difference in breast size.

·          As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

By inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman's bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. Every effort will be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible.

Breast Lift

Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts--at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.) Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume--for example, after pregnancy--breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight-from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders. And unusually large breasts can make a woman-or a teenage girl-feel extremely self-conscious.

Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such women. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.

Breast Reconstruction

Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast. Frequently, reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal (mastectomy), so the patient wakes up with a breast mound already in place, having been spared the experience of seeing herself with no breast at all.

But bear in mind, post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is not a simple procedure. There are often many options to consider as you and your doctor explore what's best for you.
