Dr. Smith arrived in Seattle in 1973 when he joined the faculty of the University of Washington School of Medicine. He ultimately rose to the position of Chief of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery) at Harborview Hospital, performing hundreds of procedures on patients with severe facial injuries and patients with head and neck cancer. Dr. Smith was extensively involved in the teaching of medical students and residents and developed a teaching module that has been used over the entire four-state WAMI (Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho) medical school teaching program.
As a result of his substantial experience in reconstructive surgery for cancer patients and a budding interest in cosmetic surgery Dr. Smith left the program in 1978 to pursue additional training in a plastic surgery residency program at Yale University, returning in 1980 to begin his private practice. Dr. Smith maintains an affiliation with the University of Washington with an appointment as an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery. His interest in teaching continues and he has written a number of scientific articles and presented numerous papers to various organizations earning the Best Short Paper award at the annual Washington Chapter of the American College Meeting for six years until the award was finally retired.
Dr. Smith has been active in numerous medical association activities over the years, serving on multiple committees including those of the King County Medical Society and the Washington State Medical Society, and was an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association. He has also been heavily involved in his specialty society activities and became the founding President of the Washington Society of Plastic Surgery and served in that position for five years. Dr. Smith also served as the representative from the Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons to the Washington State Medical Society for many years where he also represented the state's plastic surgeons. In similar fashion he has served as the representative from the regional Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons to the national American Society of Plastic Surgeons, serving on committees for that organization in part as a contributor to the society's national In-service Training Examination module for plastic surgery residents and practitioners in practice.
Dr. Smith has served as a Trustee on the Board of the Washington State Medical Association. He has also served as a Trustee on the Board of the Peer Review Organization of Washington, a watchdog organization that oversees quality of care for Medicare patients in the state. Dr. Smith continues to serve as a plastic surgical consultant for that organization today.
At his primary hospital, Dr. Smith served as the chairman of the Swedish Hospital Medical Bylaws Committee for many years, as well as on their Continuing Education Committee More recently he completed his term as the Assistant Chief of Staff at the Swedish Hospital Medical Center/ Ballard.
Dr. Smith is the very proud father of four sons, three raised and the youngest about to enter college. He enjoys gardening, reading, photography, boating, and chasing fish around the Puget Sound which he calls fishing. He is fond of classical music and has become an amateur aficionado of opera (collecting over a hundred operas on video) and commonly performs his surgeries to Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, and other great composers. However, attempting to be somewhat open minded and eclectic in his tastes, Dr. Smith is also known to listen, with some reluctance, to his youngest son's music in the car (where he admittedly has no escape).
Dr. Smith takes great pride in his staff and the quality of care provided. Dr. Smith feels strongly that his primary obligation is to be your physician first, and then your plastic surgeon, always making your best interests paramount. He listens to the patient to understand what he/she wants, and then determines not only the best way to achieve that goal at the minimum risk, but also if to do so is in the patient's best interest. It is not uncommon for Dr. Smith to turn down a patient when he thinks the request is unlikely to meet a patient's unrealistic expectations or if he thinks the timing is not suitable, such as when a prospective patient is in the midst of a personal crisis.
Dr. Smith says, "The adage 'First of all, do no harm' should be especially true of plastic surgery. It is my goal to improve the patient's appearance by enhancing the natural beauty that is within each individual, not to try to totally change them (which is impossible anyway). The best result is the one that keeps the observer guessing but unable to tell that the patient has had plastic surgery.
We always seek to achieve the best possible result with the least possible risk. In other words, I consider the work I do and our commitment to the patient a solemn duty."
