About Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty or breast implants, is a surgical procedure to enhance a woman's breast size and breast shape. Breast augmentation is sought out at the Body Sculpting Center in Scottsdale, Arizona for a number of reasons; to enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy, to balance a difference in breast size or as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery. By inserting a breast implant behind each natural breast, cosmetic and plastic surgeons are able to increase a woman's bust line by one or more bra cup sizes. If you are considering breast augmentation, this will give you a basic understanding of the procedure and help you answer the following questions:
When can breast augmentation help?
How is the breast augmentation procedure performed?
What results can be expected with different breast implants?
This page is intended only to inform patients about the breast augmentation procedure, and cannot answer all breast augmentation questions since much depends on the patient's individual circumstances. Ask the surgeon at your initial consultation or preoperative visit if there is anything you do not understand about the breast augmentation procedure or feel free to use our contact form to submit any questions to our staff.
Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence but a breast augmentation will not necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have breast augmentation surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way their breasts look. If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation surgery can have a positive effect on a persons self-image when performed for the right reasons. The most common reasons for having breast augmentation surgery are:
Add fullness to the breasts creating a more proportional body contour
Surgical Methods For Breast Augmentation
The four most common approaches taken by a surgeon performing a breast augmentation surgery are: transaxillary, periareolar, inframammary and transumbilical. These names refer to the location of the incision for the breast implant during surgery
Transaxillary Breast Augmentation
The transaxillary approach to breast augmentation refers to the incision for the breast implant being hidden in the skin folds of the armpit. There is no actual incision on the breasts themselves. The scar left by the transaxillary breast augmentation approach is hardly, if at all, visible even when the arms are held straight up over the head. The surgeons at the Body Sculpting Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, have refined their surgical techniques for all of the breast augmentation procedures and have reduced the recovery time for transaxillary breast augmentation to 36 - 48 hours using methods from the Body Sculpting Centers 24 hour breast augmentation recovery program.
Periareolar Breast Augmentation
The periareolar incision for breast implants is camouflaged by hiding the incision in the border of the areola (the sensitive pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) where the darker pigmented skin meets the lighter pigmented skin. Any scarring can be further reduced by using a zigzag incision as opposed to a straight incision. Patients receiving breast augmentation using the periareolar breast implant approach, when performed at the Body Sculpting Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, can expect to resume most normal activities within 24 hours of their surgery.
Inframammary Breast Augmentation
The inframammary breast augmentation approach is by far the most widely used and reliable method for placing a breast implant. The incision is placed below the breast on the crease of the breast. The inframammary incision method makes for easier re-augmentations and revisions as well. One drawback to using the inframammary breast augmentation method is that the scarring can be visible to some extent, mainly when the arms are held straight over the head or during intimate contact. A patient who objects to a slightly visible scar should consider one of the other breast augmentation approaches. Patients receiving breast augmentation using the inframammary approach, when performed at the Body Sculpting Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, can expect to resume most normal activities within 24 hours of their surgery.
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)
The transumbilical approach to breast augmentation is popular because it allows both breast implants to be placed with the assistance of an endoscope through a single incision in the upper fold of the belly button with no visible scarring. The transumbilical breast augmentation method is fairly new, having been developed in the early nineties, but has steadily gained in popularity. We have refined our surgical techniques for all of our breast augmentation procedures and have reduced the recovery time for transumbilical breast augmentation to 36 - 48 hours using methods from the 24 hour recovery program for breast augmentation.
Breast Lift Procedure
Over the years many of the body parts begin to sag or droop due to aging and loss of elasticity in the skin or significant weight loss. The breasts are no exception and, in fact, are often the first to go due to pregnancy and nursing.
A breast lift or series of lifts can be performed to give the breasts a more youthful and "perky" appearance. This procedure raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the remaining tissue and nipples to a more perky position. If desired, the size of the areola can be reduced during the procedure. In some cases, breast implants are inserted at the same time to give the breasts a more rounded and natural appearance.
Breast Reduction Procedure (Mammoplasty)
Sometimes the breast are too voluptuous and cumbersome making common tasks more difficult than they need to be or cause chronic shoulder, neck and back pain. Over-developed breast may make some women appear out of shape and over-weight or limit their participation in certain activities and exercises. This often results in embarrassment or self consciousness.
Mammoplasty can improve the appearance of the breasts. A reduction can also relieve the physical symptoms related to large, heavy, pendulous breasts. In exchange for this improvement the patient must accept scarring on the lower part of the breasts. The long term results of the operation cannot be predicted in a specific patient, due to many factors unrelated to surgery, such as normal slackening of tissues, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, breast feeding and weight changes. This operation permits the patient to feel better about her figure, to more easily acquire properly fitting clothing and to be more comfortable while engaging in physical activity.
This type of surgery has been practiced for more than 40 years. Better results are now being achieved through new surgical techniques. Reductions are carried out to relieve back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation and problems with clothing which are common in women with large, pendulous breasts, as well as for improvement in appearance. They may also make sports more enjoyable.
Women are not the only ones who suffer from this condition. In men enlargement of the male breast tissue, also known as gynecomastia, can be an equivalent source of discomfort and embarrassment. For men the breast reduction procedure is often performed using liposuction. See liposuction for details on this procedure.
The dangers of breast cancer are no greater after this type of breast surgery, and self examination of your breast post-operatively is still possible and important.
